Dr. Phil calls himself a "Life Strategist"; he is a psychologist
whose hard-hitting approach flies in the face of most traditional
psychotherapies, such as psychoanalysis. Identifying unconscious conflicts,
endlessly exploring feelings, and getting in touch with one's inner
child amount to hogwash for this pragmatic Texan, who defines success
according to results. To paraphrase him, the world doesn't give a
whit about your thoughts or intentions--only your actions count.
While Dr. Phil must ruffle the feathers of old-world Freudians, he
is likely smiled upon by cognitive-behavioral therapists. Phil has
made his living by studying human behavior and applying what he knows
to get people where they want to go. Essentially, he combines cognitive
and behavioral methods, along with a heavy dose of empathic confrontation.
Because Phil doesn't have all day (or an extended course of treatment)
to ease you into the realization that you have a problem that needs
fixing, he cuts to the chase: get real with yourself, define what
you really want, and make that change NOW. Not next year, not tomorrow--NOW.
The behavioral techniques he uses are based on knowledge of operant
conditioning; if you do something and there is a payoff, the behavior
is likely to be repeated, whereas if there is pain, it is likely to
be avoided. Identify your payoff for the behavior you want, and then
take control. If you control the payoff, you control the behavior.
Phil also uses the cognitive therapy approach, encouraging you to
take your distortion lenses off and get a realistic look at yourself
and your life. Identify your limiting beliefs, correct them, and you,
too, can be a winner.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy
(CBT) has been around for a few decades, and the research consistently
shows its effectiveness in combating psychological conditions such as
depression, anxiety, panic, phobias, low self-esteem, and OCD, among
others. By identifying distortions in thinking, problematic core beliefs,
and self-defeating patterns of behavior, CBT practitioners can help
you to correct them and devise plans for alleviating painful feelings
and enhancing the quality of your life. Behavioral therapy can also
be used to combat eating disorders and weight issues. It's more than
a diet, its a change in behavior. Dr. Phil and others who use CBT aim
to help you to identify the problem, set a goal, come up with a strategy,
work your plan, and reap the rewards. The only question is: are you
ready?
